SAYSKY Athlete Emil Holm is only 22 years old and one of the fastest and most talented short distance triathletes in Denmark. He has been doing triathlon for the past 10 years, and he has been a part of the national team since 2012. Last year, he also won the Danish national championship on the short distance. But the goals are higher than that, with ambitions of going to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Emil will be competing at the triathlon World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday, Feb 10 - and this is your chance to win the SAYSKY Aero Suit 3.0.
Here's what you need to do:
Emil will also be taking over our Instagram stories from Friday to Sunday, where you'll get to ask him questions about the World Cup, triathlon and much more. If you need further input, in order to come up with a qualified guess, then we suggest that you read the interview below with even more detailed insights.
Can you please introduce yourself?
I am 22 years old and the current Danish Short Distance Champion. I have been doing triathlon for the past 10 years and I have been a part of the national team since 2012 as Junior/u23/Senior. It's my 2nd year as a professional triathlete.
How and when did your passion for triathlon start?
It all started with a lot of water activity like sailing and windsurfing - and learning how to swim was an essential part of being on the water. When my swimming abilities turned out to be better than expected, I kept doing that. On a summer day In 2009 I read in the local newspaper about a triathlon. I competed, and it went horrible! But I was hooked!
You are competing at the World Cup this weekend in Cape Town. What are your expectations going into the race?
It is always hard to set a goal for the first race, because you don’t know the shape of the other athletes, but I have never felt stronger than I do right now! Top 15 is possible I think, but I would definitely like to get on the podium.
Do you have other race plans for 2019? And do you have a big goal in sight for the future?
It is hard to plan a season because every race depends on how many points you have, to get on the startlist. But the World Cup and World Series in Mixed Relay will have my full attention. We'll try to qualify a team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the Mixed Relay and I think we have a good chance to qualify.
What do you enjoy and dislike most about training for triathlons?
I just really like to swim, cycle and run! I would also do it, if I wasn’t training for a triathlon. But, I really dislike the Danish weather during the winter.
Having your dad as a coach, how is that? Is it hard to separate being dad/son, and being athlete/coach?
No equipment in the world can beat having your coach by your side. We are always talking about how the training went and what to do different. My dad/coach is working full time as a coach now, so he is always on the sideline - and the dad/coach combination is really working perfectly. Every athlete should have their parent as their coach!
You became Danish Champion in 2018 on the Draft Legal Championship. Are you aiming for the same title this year? And what was your thoughts about this going into the race?
I would like to defend my title, but a lot of the year I am going to be away from Denmark for races and camps. I was really happy when I won last year, but the Danish Series have been lacking a bit of competition the last years, with more guys turning to 70.3.
